Will this work on eczema-prone skin?
That is who the skin line was built for. The short answer is that it is made without the things that commonly set reactive skin off — no sulfates, no synthetic fragrance in the unscented line, no drying alcohols — and it is built on shea butter and cold-pressed oils rather than water and filler. What it will do for you specifically, we cannot promise, and anybody who does is selling you something. Start with the unscented Eczema Relief Butter and the cleanser bar, give it two weeks, and if it is not for you we will take it back.
Is this a medicine?
No. BlackGold Works makes cosmetics — soaps, butters, oils and cleansing bars. They are not drugs, they are not a substitute for anything your doctor has given you, and nothing here treats or cures a condition. If your skin is broken, infected or getting worse, see a dermatologist.
Is there animal fat in any of this?
In one product. The Silk Hair Butter is built on bison tallow, which is rendered animal fat and close in structure to what skin already produces — that is why it absorbs instead of sitting on the surface the way a water-and-emulsifier lotion does. Everything else is plant oils and butters. The skin line has no tallow in it at all, and the Cherry Almond bar and most of the soap line are vegan.
Is it safe for kids?
Plenty of customers use the butter and the soaps on children — the unscented butter especially. Patch test first the way you would with anything new, and keep the Peppermint bar away from small children because the menthol in it is real.

Most people get six to ten weeks out of a 4 oz butter using it daily, longer if they are only doing hands and feet. A soap bar kept on a draining dish lasts about a month of daily showers. Kept in a puddle, about a week — that is the single biggest thing people get wrong.
Why does the scent fade on me and not on my friend?
Dry skin does not hold scent. That is the whole answer. Put the butter down first, let it absorb, then the oil over the top, and the scent will hold for hours instead of minutes.

If your skin goes tight, flaky, itchy or angry for reasons you have stopped trying to predict, you already know that "gentle" on a label means nothing.
So here is what is actually true about this line. There are no sulfates in it. The unscented products have no fragrance of any kind, synthetic or essential. The base is shea butter and cold-pressed oil rather than water and emulsifier, so there is less in the jar overall and less of it is there to make the texture nice. Every ingredient is printed in full on every product page, because that is the first thing you were going to look for anyway.
What we will not tell you is that it will fix you. Nobody honest can. What we can tell you is that it is made without the things that commonly set reactive skin off, and that if it is not for you, you have thirty days.
Three steps
The order it goes on
- Cleanse
- The Turmeric Honey Aloe bar or the Honey Oatmeal bar. Lather in your hands, thirty seconds, warm water not hot.
- Seal while damp
- Pat dry but leave the skin damp, then press the Eczema Relief Butter in. Damp is the whole trick — you are locking water in, not adding grease on top.
- Finish with oil
- Two or three drops of Liquid Black Gold over the top on the parts that go driest. Hands, feet, elbows, shins.

Three honest answers to three questions we get a lot.
- Will it cure my eczema?
- We cannot answer that and neither can anybody selling you a cosmetic. These are soaps, butters and oils. They are made without the things that commonly irritate reactive skin, and a lot of people with eczema-prone skin use and re-buy them. That is the whole claim.
- How fast will I see something?
- Most people notice how the butter feels on the first application, because that is a texture, not a result. Anything beyond that depends entirely on you, and anyone quoting you a number in days is guessing.
- Is it tested or certified?
- It is made by hand in small batches by two people, to their own standard. There is no third-party certification behind it and we are not going to imply one. What there is: the full ingredient list, forty-eight reviews with names on them, and a counter you can walk into.

Three steps, three products, and the order matters more than the brand does.
The Conditioning Bar cleans without stripping, which is the whole problem with most shampoo on coarse or locked hair. The Silk Hair Butter goes on damp and puts moisture back into the strand — bison tallow for the scalp, shea and aloe for the hair, grapeseed so it never turns greasy. Liquid Black Gold closes the ends, which is where breakage actually starts.
The Hair Growth Tea is the weekly one. Steep it, cool it, pour it over a clean scalp and leave it in.
Three steps
The order it goes on
- Wash
- Rub the Conditioning Bar straight on the scalp in sections and work the lather through with your fingers.
- Feed
- Silk Hair Butter root to end on damp hair. Saturate the ends. Warm it in your palms first if your hair is low porosity.
- Seal
- Liquid Black Gold on the ends and the scalp. Three to five drops, pressed in rather than rubbed.

The list is short because the list is the point
If you have reactive skin you read the label before you read the headline. So here is the whole cabinet, what each thing is, and why it is in there.
The cabinet
Everything we build with
- Unrefined shea butter
- The base of the Eczema Relief Butter, and in the soap base too. Whipped rather than melted and re-set, which is what gives the butter its mousse texture and why a pea-sized scoop goes further than it looks like it should.
- Bison tallow
- Rendered animal fat, close in structure to what skin already makes, which is why it sinks in instead of sitting on top. It carries vitamins A, D, E and K. It is in the Silk Hair Butter only — nothing in the skin line contains it.
- Cold-pressed olive oil
- The first oil in almost every list here, and the backbone of the soap base. Slow to lather and slow to wear out, which is why a cured bar lasts the way it does.
- Hemp seed oil
- Thin, fast-absorbing and high in linoleic acid. It is in almost everything here because it carries the heavier oils in without turning the whole thing greasy.
- Jojoba oil
- Technically a wax, not an oil, and the closest thing in the plant world to human sebum. It is why Liquid Black Gold leaves a sheen rather than a slick.
- Rosehip and sea buckthorn
- The two most expensive oils in the cabinet, and the two that turn a body oil into something you notice. Both are in the butter and the oil.
- Castor oil
- Thick, tacky and doing a specific job: it is what makes lather from a soap bar and what gives the hair butter its hold on the strand.
- Turmeric root
- Ground, not extracted. It is what makes the cleanser bar gold all the way through and it is the reason that bar is the most reviewed thing we make.
- Raw honey and aloe
- Both humectants, which means they pull water toward the skin rather than coating it. In the cleanser bar and the honey oatmeal bar.
- Colloidal oatmeal
- Milled fine enough to stay suspended in water. It is the oldest trick in gentle cleansing and it still works.
- Saponified olive, coconut and palm
- The soap base. Olive for mildness, coconut for lather, palm for a bar that holds its shape in a wet shower.
- Essential oils and clean fragrance
- Peppermint, lemongrass, ginger, lime and frankincense are essential oils. The dessert scents — Strawberry Pound Cake, Cherry Almond, Pink Sugar — are phthalate-free fragrance. Every scented product says which it uses, and the unscented line has neither.

Fragrance
Scented, unscented, and the difference
Two lines, same base.
Unscented has nothing added for smell. No fragrance oil, no essential oil, no masking agent. It smells faintly of shea and olive oil, which is what those things smell like. This is the one to start with if your skin is reactive.
Scented splits in two. Peppermint, Lemongrass, Ginger Lime and Frankincense are essential oils. Strawberry Pound Cake, Cherry Almond, Pink Sugar and Coco Loco are phthalate-free fragrance, because no essential oil on earth smells like pound cake and we are not going to pretend otherwise. Every product page says which one it is.

Our story
Two people, a kitchen, and a short list
BlackGold Works is Paul and Mya. A Marine Corps veteran and his wife, making soap and butters by hand in Raleigh because what they could buy was not working.
Why we started making this
It started as a household problem
Not as a business plan. As a cabinet full of bottles that did not work.
Paul served in the Marine Corps. When he came home he and Mya ran into the thing a lot of families run into: skin that reacted to nearly everything on the shelf, and a row of expensive products that either did nothing or made it worse.
The ingredient lists told the story. Twenty-eight lines long, water listed first, and the thing on the front of the bottle listed somewhere near the bottom. So they started making it themselves, and they went the opposite direction: a base of shea butter and cold-pressed oils, a handful of ingredients, and nothing in the jar that was not doing a job.
Word of mouth
Then it worked for somebody else
Which is the part that turns a kitchen project into a business.
First a cousin. Then a neighbor. Then somebody at a food truck event in Durham who took a sample home and came back the following week asking for four. Markets, festivals, a corporate event, a fundraiser where Paul left samples on a table and people tracked him down afterward.
It is a counter at Triangle Town Center now, on the first floor inside Xpert Nutrition near Dillard’s, open seven days. And it is still made in batches small enough that the two of them cut every bar by hand and cure it for four weeks before it goes anywhere.

Will this work on eczema-prone skin?
That is who the skin line was built for. The short answer is that it is made without the things that commonly set reactive skin off — no sulfates, no synthetic fragrance in the unscented line, no drying alcohols — and it is built on shea butter and cold-pressed oils rather than water and filler. What it will do for you specifically, we cannot promise, and anybody who does is selling you something. Start with the unscented Eczema Relief Butter and the cleanser bar, give it two weeks, and if it is not for you we will take it back.
Is this a medicine?
No. BlackGold Works makes cosmetics — soaps, butters, oils and cleansing bars. They are not drugs, they are not a substitute for anything your doctor has given you, and nothing here treats or cures a condition. If your skin is broken, infected or getting worse, see a dermatologist.
Is there animal fat in any of this?
In one product. The Silk Hair Butter is built on bison tallow, which is rendered animal fat and close in structure to what skin already produces — that is why it absorbs instead of sitting on the surface the way a water-and-emulsifier lotion does. Everything else is plant oils and butters. The skin line has no tallow in it at all, and the Cherry Almond bar and most of the soap line are vegan.
Is it safe for kids?
Plenty of customers use the butter and the soaps on children — the unscented butter especially. Patch test first the way you would with anything new, and keep the Peppermint bar away from small children because the menthol in it is real.
I have sensitive skin. Where do I start?
The unscented Eczema Relief Butter and the Honey Oatmeal bar. No essential oils, no fragrance, nothing sharp. Once you know your skin is fine with the base, the scented versions are the same formula with a scent added.

Why we started making this
It started because nothing on the shelf worked
Paul is a Marine Corps veteran. He and his wife Mya started making soap in their own kitchen, for their own family, because everything they were buying either did nothing or made things worse.
The ingredient lists were the tell. Twenty-eight lines long, half of them unpronounceable, water listed first and the thing you were paying for listed twenty-second. So they went the other way: shea butter and cold-pressed oils as the base, a handful of ingredients, and nothing in the jar that was not doing a job.
It worked. Then it worked for a cousin, and a neighbor, and somebody at a market in Durham. Now it is a counter at Triangle Town Center and a workshop that still runs in batches small enough that the two of them cut every bar by hand.
How it works
Why a butter, and why it is not lotion
Most moisturizer is mostly water. It feels like something for twenty minutes, the water leaves, and your skin is exactly where it started.
The Eczema Relief Butter is five things: aloe vera, shea butter, olive oil, castor oil, jojoba oil. No water, so nothing evaporates off and nothing needs an emulsifier or a preservative to hold it together. We whip it rather than melting and re-setting it, which is why it goes on like a mousse and melts to an oil on contact instead of sitting on top.
